Angel Tattoos

Angel tattoos (as well as other religious tattoos) have been slowly but surely gaining popularity over the past few decades and it makes sense when you think about it – if you get an angel tattoo, it's like having your guardian angel with you all the time.

The word angel comes from the Latin word angelos, meaning messenger. They are a link between heaven and earth. Angels belong to Judaist, Christian and Islamic traditions.

According to the Bible and the Koran, angels have the following tasks:

  • Bring messages to the people, warn them or bring the word of God.
  • Worship God.
  • Angels serve and protect humans.
  • They fight evil.
  • They carry out God's orders (they do have a free will though, they can choose to obey or disobey, just like humans).
  • Angels guard heaven and hell.
  • They keep track of all deeds done by every human being.

Angel tattoo designs are usually pictured with wings, although the Bible doesn't mention angels that have wings. The confusion comes from another kind of supernatural beings mentioned in the bible, called cherubs. So the kind of angel tattoos that are so popular nowadays are actually cherub tattoos (see further).

Angel tattoos can be large or small, some designs are very large – covering the back for instance.

Often, angel tattoo designs are taken from classic art. There is a wealth of angel images in the art of the middle ages and Renaissance and these can be adapted to tattoo images by a skilled tattoo artist.

Angel tattoos can have the following meaning:

  • Peace
  • Beauty
  • Spirituality
  • Innocence
  • Purity
  • Love
  • Protection
  • Devotion
  • Faith
  • They express a personal relationship with God.

Sometimes people will get an angel tattoo to commemorate the death of a loved one. According to a common belief system, the dead become angels who protect us. Getting an angel tattoo in memory of someone is a way of having them with you for always.

Angel tattoos are often combined with designs of:

  • Trumpets
  • Harps
  • Swords
  • Banners
  • Halos
  • Bows
  • Clouds
  • The devil

Angel Wing Tattoos

Angel Wing Tattoo

Rather than a whole angel, some people opt for an angel wings tattoo. The wings can be quite large and ornate, covering the shoulders and or much of the back. Other angel tattoos depict the whole angel in a classic pose, either flying or at rest.

The most popular spot for angel wing tattoos is between the shoulders, the place where wings would naturally be if humans had them (I wish I had some!).

Why Angel Wing Tattoos

Widely recognized as a spiritual symbol, an angel wing tattoo is increasing in popularity among those who wish to show their faith in a display of artistic expression. To this day, many believe that angels watch over us every day and are there to guide us when we need guidance the most. In fact, it is thought that individuals choose an angel wings tattoo because of their symbol of protection.

Angels are considered great protectors and are believed to guide individuals to safety. In addition, some choose to forever keep the memory of a lost loved one close to their heart in the form of an angel wing tattoo.

Angel Wing Tattoo Designs

An angel wing tattoo can be either large or small in design, making them ideal for either a man or a woman. The male population usually prefers to have an angel wings tattoo placed on the upper arm or chest, while women generally prefer placement on the shoulder or abdomen. With that being said, it is important to note that it would not be at all uncommon to find an angel wing tattoo on the foot or wrist area. A large angel wings tattoo would likely be placed on the back, which can be ideal for either a man or a woman.

Angel Wing Tattoo Pictures

When searching for the perfect image to recreate, artistic renderings of angel wings are widely available online and in art magazines or books. For the individual who is an artist at heart, he/she can put their imagination on paper by creating their own design for an angel wing tattoo. Once the image is ready, it can be taken to a tattoo artist for an evaluation and to see if it can be applied as a tattoo. The size of the tattoo will largely determine it's price, so keep this in mind when selecting a design.

Before the purchase or application of angel wing tattoo, an individual should make sure that the artist is properly trained and licensed to produce a safe and quality tattoo. Any tattoo, including an angel wings tattoo, is not to be applied by an amateur or anyone who has not been properly trained in the handling and sterilization of tattoo equipment. If you have any questions about the safety of your tattoo, be sure to ask the artist who applies it. He/she will bandage the site of the tattoo and provide you with instructions on how to avoid infection and general care for the site until it has completely healed.
